1. Don’t brush your hair while it’s wet. Hair is more vulnerable when it’s not dry so it’s much easier to snap during brushing. Instead, let your hair air dry as much as you can, and use a wide tooth comb to get the knots out.
2. Choose a good quality, natural bristle brush. A boar bristle paddle brush won’t damange your hair during brushing as much as a 100% synthetic brush.
3. Always condition your hair after each shampoo. This will protect your hair from getting brittle. A deep conditioning once a month will go deep into the hair shaft to protect it even further. Choose a deep conditioner that contains protein to help strengthen your hair as well.
4. Ponytail holders can damage hair, so choose ones that are designed to prevent that. Rubber bands without any coating are notorious for ripping chunks of hair out at a time.
5. Curling irons, flat irons and blow dryers are all heating instruments that should be avoided as much as possible. The extreme heat from these quick-fix tools will dry out and damage your hair which can only be reversed completely by trimming it off. Choose high quality styling tools that allow you to select lower heat settings.
6. Excessive styling like regular backcombing can also be damaging to your hair. The pulling and tugging involved with styling your hair can harm it, so use care when styling and remember to be gentle!
